What dreaming about your ex getting married usually points to
Dream interpretation is not prediction and not diagnosis. This article separates what sleep research observes from what popular interpretation associates with the theme, always saying which is which.
Dreaming that your ex is getting married is not a warning that the wedding will happen, nor proof that you still love that person. A wedding is one of the clearest symbols of the end of a cycle: when it shows up with an ex, the dream is usually closing, or testing, a door that was left ajar. It can come from news on social media, a chance encounter, your own new relationship or a date that reminds you of your time together.
This article is the version of dreaming about an ex with the wedding at its center. If the dream was about the person coming back to you, read dreaming about your ex coming back.

Why an ex's wedding turns into a dream
According to the continuity hypothesis, tested by Michael Schredl and Friedrich Hofmann in 2003, dreams follow what occupies the waking mind, including what stays only in your thoughts. The engagement photo that popped up in your feed, a comment from a mutual friend, the month you first met: it takes very little for the subject to come back. If the news reached you through social media, it is also worth reading dreaming about social media.
In 2021, Schredl and Wood studied partners and ex-partners in dreams, based on 1,612 reports from 425 students. Exes appeared less often than current partners, and interactions with them were more often negative. But the researchers also found, unexpectedly, more positive emotions and more friendliness in dreams about an ex than in dreams about the partner, which tended to be more ordinary. The result matches what many people feel in this dream: jealousy and tenderness at the same time. The authors conclude that dreams reflect important aspects of relationships and breakups.

Your ex at the altar according to Freud, Jung and faith
In Freud's psychoanalysis. Freud held that a dream is the fulfillment of a wish, and he soon ran into an objection: what about the dreams that show exactly what we do not want? He called them counter-wish dreams and looked in them for a hidden wish behind the discomfort. Applied here, seeing your ex get married can serve very different wishes: that the story finally end, that you prove to yourself it is over, or that you are still remembered. Only the dreamer's own associations can say which one weighs more.
In Jung's psychology. In Man and His Symbols, Joseph Henderson writes about rites of initiation, which mark the passage from one phase of life to another. Marriage is one of those rites. In the Jungian reading, watching your ex's wedding can represent the inner ceremony that was still missing: the moment of recognizing that that phase is over and that your life is moving in another direction.
In symbols and faith. In A Dictionary of Symbols, Chevalier and Gheerbrant treat marriage as a symbol of union. In Ecclesiastes, the Bible reminds us that there is "a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing" (Ecclesiastes 3:5). For people of faith, the dream can be read as an invitation to let go of what is past and to wish well to someone who took another path.
Bringing both readings together. Science shows where the scene comes from; faith and symbols help give it an ending. Both point to the same place: closing the cycle with care, without rushing and without guilt.

Scenes from the dream of your ex getting married
| Scene | What usually goes with it |
|---|---|
| Getting the invitation to your ex's wedding | Recent news about the person, a feeling of being told about an ending you have not yet digested |
| Seeing your ex at the altar with someone else | Comparison, jealousy, a question about what was missing in your relationship |
| Being at the party as a guest | A wish to show maturity, social discomfort, running into mutual friends |
| Trying to stop the wedding | Regret, unfinished business, difficulty accepting decisions that are not yours to make |
| Being the one who marries your ex | Missing a phase of life, idealizing the past, a wish for stability |
| Feeling relief or indifference at the ceremony | A common sign that the cycle is already closed |
If the dress or the bride dominated the scene, read dreaming about a dress and dreaming about a bride. If the dream took place in a church, see dreaming about a church.

What dream books say
O Livro dos Sonhos, a Brazilian dream book by L. P. Baçan, has no entry for an ex or for someone else's wedding. The closest ones are wedding (in life, help on the way; in love, pregnancy), invitation (in life, a profitable deal; in love, commitment) and groom (in life, a way out of difficulties; in love, joy). These are associations from folk tradition, with no connection to the dreamer's own story.
Freud called this way of reading the decoding method: each image is swapped for a fixed meaning, as with a key, without asking what it means to the person who dreamed it.

When the dream of your ex getting married calls for care
It deserves attention when the dream repeats for many nights, when you wake up and spend the day checking your ex's profile, or when the sadness of the breakup does not ease as the months go by. Muting profiles for a while, talking with friends and looking after your sleep routine usually help. If the scene feels like saying goodbye, sometimes that is exactly what it is.
If the pain is getting in the way of work, sleep or your will to do things, see a psychologist. Frequent nightmares can be treated; see how to have fewer nightmares. In intense distress, in the US, you can call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), free and available 24 hours a day.

What folk tradition says about an ex getting married
In Brazilian folk belief, seeing your ex get married is often read as a sign of liberation: the past is gone and the road is clear. Getting the invitation would mean news on its way; stopping the wedding, an attachment that needs to be released; dancing at the party, peace with your own story. Some people read the dream as the announcement of a new love for the dreamer. These are beliefs from tradition, for reflection, not predictions.
