The short answer
Dream interpretation is not prediction and not diagnosis. This article separates what sleep research observes from what popular interpretation associates with the theme.
Dreaming about an ex is common and usually does not mean you still love them or should get back together. The dream often uses your ex as a symbol of a period in your life, a relationship pattern or an emotion that resurfaced: longing, anger, insecurity or relief. What is happening in your life now matters more than who showed up.

Why your ex shows up
Dream research shows that what you dream tends to follow your thoughts and feelings from the day, the continuity hypothesis. Seeing an old photo, driving past a place you used to go together, starting a new relationship or going through something similar to back then are common triggers. A recent breakup also keeps the person on your mind, and that carries into the night.
The most common scenarios
- Getting back together: often speaks more to missing a phase of life, or something missing now, than to the person.
- Arguing with your ex: shows up with unresolved issues or pent-up anger.
- Seeing your ex with someone else: stirs jealousy and comparison, even if you have moved on.
- Your ex apologizing: may reflect a wish for closure.
- Dreaming about an ex while in a relationship: very common, and not a sign of cheating.
The next-day effect
A study of couples found that dreams about a current partner, such as dreaming they cheated, affected mood and interactions the following day. Dreams about an ex can work the same way: the feeling may linger for hours, but it comes from the dream, not from anything that happened. Recognizing that helps you avoid acting on impulse, like texting your ex or getting suspicious of your current partner.

A useful way to look at this dream
Ask yourself: what feeling stayed with me when I woke up? What has been going on in my life lately? If the dream keeps coming back and you notice you still think about this person a lot, talking with someone you trust or a therapist can help you close the chapter. For other dreams about people close to you, see why someone shows up in your dreams.
What popular interpretation says
In popular belief, dreaming about an ex is sometimes read as a sign they are thinking about you, and sometimes as a warning not to repeat old mistakes. There is no scientific evidence for the first idea. The second can be a useful reflection, as long as it is not treated as a prediction. See also how to interpret dreams based on science and culture.

Frequently asked questions
Does dreaming about my ex mean I still have feelings for them?
Not necessarily. The dream usually reflects recent emotions and memories, not a wish to get back together.
Is dreaming about my ex while in a relationship cheating?
No. It is common and does not indicate infidelity. Dreams are not conscious choices.
Does dreaming about my ex mean they are thinking about me?
There is no evidence for that. The dream reflects what is on your mind, not theirs.
How do I stop dreaming about my ex?
There is no switch, but cutting triggers, like scrolling old photos before bed, and processing the breakup usually reduce how often it happens.
