The short answer

Dream interpretation is not prediction and not diagnosis. This article separates what sleep research observes from what popular interpretation associates with the theme.

Dreaming about a fight or an argument does not predict conflict or a breakup. The dream tends to reuse everyday tensions, conversations left halfway, things you did not say or the heavy mood of a place, such as work or home. It also shows up in times of tiredness and irritation, when patience is running low.

What research observes

Conflicts with other people are among the most common themes of bad dreams. In an online survey of adults' most recent nightmares, interpersonal conflict was among the most reported plots, alongside being chased and falling.

These dreams also leave a mark on the next day. A study of couples found that dreaming about conflict or jealousy involving a partner was linked to more tension in the couple's interactions the following day, even though nothing had actually happened.

How not to bring the dream into real life

Because the dream affects your mood, it helps to remind yourself when you wake up that the anger came from the dream scene, not from something the person did. If the dream pointed to a real issue, such as a postponed conversation, it can be a good reminder to sort it out calmly, while awake. If fight dreams keep coming back and disrupt your sleep, see how to have fewer nightmares.

What dream books say

Livro do Sonho, a popular Brazilian dream dictionary, links a fight to disagreements at home and elsewhere and to a lack of understanding, and watching a fight would point to a rift or breakup nearby. For those who read the dream as a message, it works as a reminder to look after communication before small frictions grow.

Freud described dream books as a kind of dictionary that translates each image into another with a fixed meaning. Artemidorus of Daldis, author of the oldest dream interpretation book that has survived, advised looking at the dreamer's life before interpreting. If you see the dream as a message, both paths suggest the same thing: ask what this image brings to mind in your life right now. See dream meanings according to science and culture.

What folklore says

In folk readings, dreaming about a fight is sometimes read the other way around, as a sign of reconciliation, and in other readings as a warning of disagreement. The two versions contradict each other, which shows they are cultural symbols with no predictive value. See dream meanings according to science and culture.
