What a dreamed interview usually shows
Dream interpretation is not prediction and not diagnosis. This article separates what sleep research observes from what popular interpretation associates with the theme, always saying which is which.
Dreaming about a job interview usually has to do with the feeling of being evaluated. It can be a real hiring process, but also an exam, a presentation or the first dinner with your partner's family. The interview is the setting; the subject is other people's judgment, and your own.
The dream does not say whether you will get the job, and doing badly in a dreamed interview is not a bad omen. It is a close relative of dreaming that you are late or failing a test, the classic evaluation dream, and of the broader theme of dreaming about work or your boss.

Evaluation dreams: what research observes
When Tore Nielsen and colleagues mapped the typical dreams of Canadian university students in 2003, themes tied to school, teachers and exams appeared among the most reported, alongside being late and being chased. The job interview is the grown-up version of that old exam dream: someone from the outside decides whether you pass or not.
The continuity hypothesis of Michael Schredl and Friedrich Hofmann helps complete the picture. If you are looking for work, sending out résumés or waiting to hear back from a hiring process, you live with this theme all day long, and sleep tends to give back what was lived with emotion. It is not unusual to dream that everything goes wrong the night before and then do well.

Freud, Jung and faith on being evaluated
In Freud's psychoanalysis. In The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud devotes a section to examination dreams. He observed that they come up when a person has a responsibility the next day and fears a fiasco. And he proposed a curious reading: the dream would reach back for an old exam in which the fear turned out to be exaggerated, as if saying "Do not fear tomorrow!". By this reading, the interview that goes wrong at night may be a disguised consolation.
In Jung's psychology. Jung suggested also reading dreams on the subjective level: the figures in the scene may represent parts of the dreamer. The stern interviewers who never smile and write everything down may be your own critical voice. Man and His Symbols reinforces that dreams speak through personal images, not through formulas.
In symbols and faith. In the First Book of Samuel (16:7), as a new king is being chosen, it is written that people look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart. For believers, the passage takes some of the weight off other people's judgment. A Dictionary of Symbols links the scales to justice and judgment, recalling the weighing of the heart in ancient Egypt.
Bringing both readings together. Research shows that evaluation dreams are common and go along with periods of expectation; traditions ask who you feel judged by. Both readings invite you to treat the dream as a thermometer, not as a verdict.

Variations of the interview dream
| Scene | What usually goes with it |
|---|---|
| Arriving late to the interview | Fear of missing an opportunity, a packed schedule, a sense of always running |
| Forgetting what to say or losing your voice | Insecurity about your own abilities, fear of freezing in front of someone |
| A familiar interviewer, like a former boss or teacher | Old evaluations that still weigh on you, a wish to show you have changed |
| Getting hired and receiving the offer | Positive expectation, desire for recognition, rehearsal of an achievement |
| An interview in another language | A sense of being out of place or of not knowing the rules of the game |
| Showing up in the wrong clothes or in pajamas | Fear of being seen as unprepared, embarrassment about making mistakes in public |
When clothing is at the center of the scene, read dreaming that you are naked in public and dreaming about clothes. And if you are job hunting and getting lots of offers on your phone, it is worth knowing the signs of a fake job scam on WhatsApp.

When interview anxiety goes too far
Dreaming about an interview before a hiring process is expected. It calls for attention when the dream turns into a nightmare that repeats for weeks, when you lose whole nights of sleep or when the fear of being evaluated starts making you give up on opportunities. Performance anxiety is treatable, and so are frequent nightmares: the 2018 position paper of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine brings together the approaches with the best evidence. Talk to a health professional.

The interview in dream books
O Livro dos Sonhos, a Brazilian dream book by L. P. Baçan, has no entry for interviews. The closest ones are employment (in life, improvements; in love, stability) and invitation (in life, a profitable deal; in love, commitment). By that tradition, being called in to talk about work would be a favorable sign. It is a folk reading, without proof.
Jung reminded us that a symbol does not fit in a list: the same interview can speak of work for one person and of marriage for another. The useful question is what was at stake for you that week.

What folk belief says about the interview
In Brazilian folk reading, passing the dreamed interview is seen as doors opening; failing it, as a call for more preparation. An interview with lots of people in the room would speak of eyes on you; a quick interview, of a decision drawing near. A bright room is associated with an easier path. These are traditional readings, not predictions. See what dream meanings look like according to science and culture.

Frequently asked questions
Does dreaming about a job interview mean I will get the job?
No. The dream does not predict outcomes. It usually reflects the expectation and nerves of someone being evaluated, or of someone who feels that way in another area of life.
Why do I dream that the interview goes wrong?
Evaluation dreams tend to stage the fear of failing. Freud even saw a consolation in them: the dream would recall old exams in which the fear was bigger than the danger.
I dreamed about an interview but I am not looking for a job. Why?
The interview can stand for any situation in which you feel judged, such as a difficult conversation, an exam or a presentation.
What does it mean to dream that I got hired after the interview?
It usually goes with a desire for recognition and a positive expectation. Folk tradition reads it as a good sign, but that is belief, not prediction.
What is the spiritual meaning of dreaming about a job interview?
In faith readings, the dream may be a reminder that a person's worth is not reduced to other people's judgment, as in 1 Samuel 16:7. It is a belief-based interpretation, without scientific proof.
