Dreaming about your daughter: what it usually points to
Dream interpretation is not prediction and not diagnosis. This article separates what sleep research observes from what popular interpretation associates with the theme, always saying which is which.
Dreaming about your daughter does not predict a pregnancy, a wedding or danger. Daughters who are little, teenagers or grown women tend to appear in the dreams of mothers and fathers at moments when the relationship changes: the first day of school, the first trip without the family, the move to another city, a serious relationship, the news of a grandchild. The dream goes along with that adjustment, with pride, longing or fear.
This article covers scenes with a daughter; the variations with a son are in dreaming about your son. People who have no daughter and dream about one will also find answers below.

Why your daughter appears in your dreams
According to the continuity hypothesis, tested by Michael Schredl and Friedrich Hofmann in 2003, anyone who shares a daily routine with a daughter, or worries about her from afar, carries that care into the night. The little daughter shows up among lunch boxes, fevers and the school's June festival (the festa junina, a Brazilian tradition); the grown daughter, among unanswered messages, work, a wedding and grandchildren.
When the dream is about danger, it follows a well-known script: the death or injury of people close to us is among the nightmare themes adults cite most often in the 2018 online study by Schredl and Anja Göritz. It is the fear of someone who loves, not a warning.

Your daughter little, grown, pregnant or a bride: the scenes
| Scene | What usually goes with it |
|---|---|
| Your daughter little, the way she was years ago | Missing a phase, a daughter who grew up fast, a recent change in the relationship |
| Your grown daughter turning into a child again | A wish to protect someone who already takes care of herself, worry about a decision of hers |
| Your daughter pregnant | A real or hoped-for pregnancy in the family, looking forward to a grandchild, a daughter entering a new phase |
| Your daughter in a wedding dress | A wedding or a serious relationship, joy mixed with the feeling that she will follow her own path |
| Your daughter crying | Worry about something she is going through, guilt over a disagreement, a wish to be closer |
| Having a daughter you do not have | A wish to have children, time spent with girls in the family, a more sensitive side of you taking shape |
For a pregnancy in the dream, see dreaming that someone is pregnant; for the white dress, dreaming about a bride and dreaming about a wedding; if the grandchild has already appeared, dreaming about a grandchild.

Freud, Jung and faith on your daughter
In Freud's psychoanalysis. In The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud recounts dreams of his own daughters. After an outing, the older one, eight and a half years old, dreamed that a neighbor's boy was part of the family; the youngest, nineteen months old, talked about strawberries in her sleep after a day without eating because she had been unwell. For him, children's dreams show desire without disguise. Freud also wrote about the tensions that arise when a daughter grows up and wants more freedom. Along those lines, dreaming about your daughter as a little girl again may be a simple wish: to go back to a phase in which you knew exactly how to protect her.
In Jung's psychology. In a book made jointly with the mythologist Karl Kerényi, Jung wrote an essay on the Kore, the maiden of Greek myths, and the pair Demeter and Persephone: the mother who loses her daughter and searches for her until she finds her again. For Jung, in this myth mother and daughter mirror each other, as if every woman carried both. Man and His Symbols reminds us that no symbol has a fixed meaning; a daughter in a wedding dress in a mother's dream can be celebration and farewell at the same time.
In symbols and faith. In the Gospels, Jairus begs Jesus for his twelve-year-old daughter; Jesus takes the girl by the hand and says "Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise" (Mark 5:41). The Canaanite woman insists with Jesus for her daughter's healing until she is heard (Matthew 15:21-28). For people of faith, these are images of mothers and fathers who never give up praying for their daughters.
Bringing both readings together. Research shows that your daughter appears because she fills your care and your memory; faith offers support for the fears of those who love. A question for the next day: does your daughter need more presence or more trust right now?

When your daughter is the one having nightmares, and when to ask for help
Sometimes the worrying dream is hers. A 2014 review by Gauchat, Séguin and Zadra shows that nightmares affect a significant share of children of all ages, with signs of a peak around age 10; between 10 and 15, girls start reporting more nightmares than boys. Anxiety and other sleep problems, such as sleepwalking, are among what most often shows up alongside them. In a study that followed children in Quebec from 5 months to 6 years old, Simard and colleagues saw that comforting a child who woke up in the night with affection appeared as a protective factor, linked to fewer bad dreams in the early years. The guide children's nightmares by age and how to comfort them explains what to do.
If your daughter has nightmares almost every night, is afraid to go to sleep or shows strong changes in behavior, talk to her pediatrician. If it is your dreams about her that come with anguish, a psychologist can help, and frequent nightmares in adults can be treated. If you are in intense distress, in the US you can call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), 24 hours a day; outside the US, reach out to your local crisis line.

Your daughter in dream books
O Livro dos Sonhos, a Brazilian dream book by L. P. Baçan, has no entry for daughter, only for son: joys in life and a breakup in love. For a daughter as a bride, the nearby entries are wedding (help close at hand in life, pregnancy in love) and veil (offenses in life, happiness in love); for a crying daughter, crying appears as future satisfaction and waiting. These are readings from tradition, not predictions.
Freud saw in these books a translation by fixed code, one that ignores who had the dream and what they lived through the day before.

Dreaming about your daughter in folk reading
In folk reading, a smiling daughter is joy at home; a pregnant daughter, good news and plenty; a daughter in a wedding dress, union and achievement, or, for some, a change that will take her far away; a daughter little again, longing and protection; a crying daughter, a request for attention and conversation. These are readings from tradition, worth taking as reflection, not as prediction. See what dream meanings look like according to science and culture.
