Research on the continuity between waking life and dreaming shows that habits and worries of the day return at night. Someone who works at a butcher shop, cooks for the family, started a diet without red meat or spent the weekend at a barbecue has plenty of material for this dream. Even the supermarket bill can become a tray of meat in the scene.
Body and environmental stimuli also come in. In the experiments of Dement and Wolpert in 1958, sounds, lights and drops of water applied during sleep appeared transformed in dreams. Real hunger, the smell of a neighbor's barbecue or the memory of a heavy dinner can take the form of meat on the table.

What dream dictionaries record
In O Livro dos Sonhos (a Brazilian dream book), L. P. Baçan is pessimistic about this symbol: meat, in life, impaired health and, in love, ill feeling; butcher shop, in life, illness and, in love, quarrels and jealousy. It is an old popular reading that has no medical basis and should not guide any health decision.
Freud called this procedure "decoding": each image is swapped for a fixed meaning, as with a code key. He found the method poor precisely because it ignores the dreamer. The meat of someone who is hungry, of someone who went vegetarian and of someone who works at a meatpacking plant hardly say the same thing.

In Freud's psychoanalysis. One of the examples of wish fulfillment in The Interpretation of Dreams is precisely about meat. A boy under four, on a milk diet by medical order and sent to bed without dinner as punishment, dreamed of a huge plate of roast meat with vegetables, eaten whole by someone he could not see. For Freud, the diner was the boy himself, hidden because he knew the meal was not allowed to him: the wish appears, but already disguised.
In Jung's psychology. In the Jungian key, the dream tries to restore psychological balance, compensating for what the conscious attitude exaggerates or leaves aside. A person who controls themselves too much, in food or pleasures, may dream of a table full of meat, as if the dream recalled the side of the body and appetite that was forgotten.
In symbols and faith. In the Dictionary of Symbols, Chevalier and Gheerbrant show that the meaning of the word flesh became increasingly inward. In the Old Testament, it represents the fragility and passing of human life, in contrast with the divine spirit; in the letters of Saint Paul, it gains a moral sense and designates human nature inclined to error. In Christian art, the authors recall, the temptation of Saint Anthony is one of the images of this struggle between flesh and spirit.
