The short answer

Dream interpretation is not prediction and not diagnosis. This article separates what sleep research observes from what popular interpretation associates with the theme.

Dreaming about a cow or a bull does not bring money or bad luck. When the scene is calm, with the animal grazing, it usually comes with a feeling of peace and a simple life. When a bull chases or attacks you, the dream joins the group of threat dreams, common in times of pressure.

What research observes

Under the continuity hypothesis, the animals that appear in dreams tend to be the ones that are part of a person's life. People who grew up or live in the countryside, work with cattle or recently visited a farm are much more likely to dream about cows and bulls than people who live in cities.

The angry bull scene fits the idea that dreams rehearse dangerous situations in a safe setting: a large, strong animal coming straight at you is a classic threat script.

When it is worth paying attention

Dreaming about cattle is common and harmless. If the dream of a charging bull keeps coming back and you wake up frightened several times a week, it is worth talking to a health professional, as with any frequent nightmare: see how to have fewer nightmares.

What dream books say

Livro do Sonho, a popular Brazilian dream dictionary, sees a gentle ox as complete happiness and many joys, and gives different meanings by color: brown, good news; spotted, luck in business; black, some sadness. A grazing cow, for the same dictionary, would be linked to trips and good news in the family.

Freud described dream books as a kind of dictionary that translates each image into another with a fixed meaning. Artemidorus of Daldis, author of the oldest dream interpretation book that has survived, advised looking at the dreamer's life before interpreting. If you see the dream as a message, both paths suggest the same thing: ask what this image brings to mind in your life right now. See dream meanings according to science and culture.

What folklore says

In many folk readings, the cow is linked to abundance, motherhood and prosperity, and the bull to strength and hard work. A fat cow is read as a good phase and a thin cow as hard times. In several traditions, cattle were also a symbol of wealth, since for a long time they measured a family's assets. These are cultural readings with no evidence behind them.
