The short answer
Dream interpretation is not prediction and not diagnosis. This article separates what sleep research observes from what popular interpretation associates with the theme, always saying which is which.
Dreaming about a man does not announce a new love, a betrayal or the arrival of a specific person. Most of the time, the character is assembled by the brain from faces, voices and gestures glimpsed in passing. What he does in the dream (seduces, threatens, protects, teaches) usually says more about your moment than his appearance does. For strangers in general, of any sex, see dreaming about a stranger.

What research observes about male figures
Studies on the continuity between waking life and dreaming (Schredl and Hofmann, 2003) show that nighttime characters come largely from waking life: coworkers, neighbors, the bus driver, the actor from this week's series. An unknown man may be the sum of several of them, and a known man usually arrives together with the matter that involves him in daily life.
When the man in the dream is your partner, there is more specific data. A 2014 study by Dylan Selterman and colleagues followed people in relationships and observed that dreams about the partner, such as scenes of jealousy or cheating, were associated with more conflict and less intimacy the next day. The dream does not reveal what the other person did, but it can affect the mood of the one who woke up. See also dreaming about being cheated on.

Freud, Jung and faith on this dream
In Freud's psychoanalysis. In The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud gathers older authors who saw the dream as a portrait of the person living it; Schopenhauer, for example, said that every person who appears in a dream acts and speaks according to their own character. For Freud, the scene joins leftovers from the previous day with wishes that are not said aloud. The man who seduces in the dream may be there because of a compliment received the day before; the one who threatens, because of an argument left unanswered.
In Jung's psychology. In Jung's view, the animus is the masculine personification in a woman's unconscious, with positive and negative sides, and it is usually shaped by the father figure. Man and His Symbols tells a gypsy tale in which a lonely woman takes in a handsome stranger who, on revealing who he is, says he is death itself: for the book, an animus that pulls the woman away from any human bond. The animus also often appears as a group of men. For a man, a strange male figure is usually read as the shadow.
In symbols and faith. In A Dictionary of Symbols, Chevalier and Gheerbrant recall that the name Adam is linked to the Hebrew adamah, the tilled earth, and that, in Jung's analysis, Adam seen as a wise old man corresponds to the archetype of the father and the ancestor, and may appear in dreams as a prophet, sage or philosopher. It is a key for the gentleman who gives guidance in the dream. In Genesis 2:7, the Bible describes man formed from the dust of the earth and brought to life by the breath of God.
Bringing both readings together. Science explains where these faces come from; psychology and faith ask what they represent. Before looking for meaning, it is worth writing down what the man was doing, where he was and what you felt near him.

Scenes that show up most in this dream
| Scene | What usually goes with it |
|---|---|
| A handsome unknown man who approaches | A wish for novelty, attention or affection, with no necessary link to a real person |
| A strange man following you or carrying a weapon | Insecurity, a sense of diffuse threat, fear of some current situation |
| An older man who gives guidance or shows the way | A search for advice, experience and a firm reference |
| A known man, married or lying in your bed | A real matter linked to him, intimacy, curiosity or discomfort |
| A naked man or a pregnant man | Strangeness, a sense of exposure or of something new taking shape |
If the man was someone you love, it is worth reading dreaming about your husband too.

When the dream deserves professional attention
Most of the time, dreaming about a man does not point to any problem. If a threatening man comes back night after night, if the dream revives a situation of violence you lived through or if you start to be afraid of sleeping, talk to a health professional: frequent nightmares have treatment and do not need to be faced without support. See how to have fewer nightmares.

What dream books say
In O Livro dos Sonhos, a Brazilian dream book, L. P. Baçan sums up the man like this: in life, stability; in love, a new love. It is the reading that feeds the folk belief that a handsome man in a dream announces romance on its way.
Man and His Symbols, the book edited by Jung, distrusts this kind of ready answer: for the book, dreams are individual phenomena, and their symbols do not fit in a catalogue. The same man in a suit may be, for one person, the boss who demands results and, for another, the memory of a father on a Sunday. The dictionary gives a clue; the context decides.

Folk beliefs about this dream
In folk interpretation, a handsome man in a dream is usually read as a sign of romance or good news; an unknown man, as something new on the way; an older man, as advice that will arrive; and a dead man, as the end of a phase. Some also see in an armed man a call for caution. These are cultural readings, for reflection, not guarantees of what will happen. See what dream meanings look like according to science and culture.

Frequently asked questions
What does it mean to dream about a handsome unknown man?
It usually comes with a wish for novelty, attention or affection, not with a real person on the way. Baçan links the man to a new love, but that is a dream-book reading, not a prediction.
Is dreaming about a man following me a warning?
It does not predict real danger. Chase dreams are among the most common and appear in phases of insecurity or pressure. If the scene repeats and disturbs your sleep, it is worth talking to a health professional.
What does it mean to dream about a Black man?
There is no fixed meaning for the color of someone's skin in a dream. In general, the character is built from people you live with or see in daily life. What counts is his role in the scene: he welcomes, teaches, frightens or goes unnoticed.
And dreaming about a dead man?
It usually goes with the end of a stage, a recent loss or heavy news seen the day before. If it was someone close who has already passed away, the dream may be part of grieving. It is not an announcement of death.
What would Jung say about dreaming of a man?
For a woman, the figure can be read as the animus, the masculine side of the unconscious, which helps or hinders; for a man, as the shadow. A wise old gentleman recalls the archetype of the father and the ancestor. It is theory for thinking about yourself, not prediction.
