Where AI shows up in WhatsApp

In recent years, artificial intelligence features have been added to WhatsApp in specific spots: quick reply suggestions, sticker generation from text descriptions, message summaries in very active groups, and, in some markets, a conversational assistant inside the app itself.

None of these features change how the app works at its core — they show up as extra options, not a replacement for how you already use WhatsApp.

What it already does well

The most useful cases today are specific and narrow:

  • Summarizing large groups — useful when you've been offline for hours in a very active group.
  • Generating custom stickers from a text description.
  • Suggesting short replies in work or customer-service conversations.

What it doesn't do

Worth clearing up a few common exaggerations: WhatsApp's AI doesn't read the content of your conversations to train models without that being disclosed in the app's policy, it doesn't replace the end-to-end encryption of regular messages, and it doesn't answer for you automatically — every suggestion needs to be approved before being sent.

How to turn it on or off

AI features are usually found under Settings → AI Hub, or appear as icons right inside the chat field (like the AI sticker icon). Each feature can be turned on or off individually, without affecting the rest of the app.

Informational content only. It does not replace individualized medical, financial, or professional advice.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp's AI read my private conversations?

Personal conversations remain protected by end-to-end encryption. AI features that analyze text, like group summaries, only work when you explicitly trigger that function.

Do I need to pay to use the AI features?

The basic AI features available in the app are free for regular users.

Can I turn off all AI features?

Yes, each feature can be individually disabled in the app's settings.
