What this dream usually points to (and what it does not)

Dream interpretation is not prediction and not diagnosis. This article separates what sleep research observes from what popular interpretation associates with the theme, always saying which is which.

Dreaming about menstruation does not predict pregnancy, illness or a late period. The dream can appear close to your period, far from it, during pregnancy or after menopause, and it usually mixes what the body feels with the worries of the day, such as a date that is getting closer, an appointment or the wish to know that everything is fine.

The emotion in the scene (relief, shame, alarm, indifference) says more than the blood itself. Paying attention to that emotion is usually the most useful way to understand why the dream came up now.

What research says about the menstrual cycle and dreams

Many people assume that the cycle changes dreams in a predictable way, but studies have mixed results. In a survey of a large group of young women, remembering dreams or not did not depend on the phase of the cycle, and the only finding was a tendency toward more pleasant content in the luteal phase among those who did remember. In another study, which included cortisol measurements, the authors found no link between the phase of the cycle and dream recall or the emotional tone of dreams.

In other words, science does not show that the cycle "produces" the dream about menstruation. It is more likely that the dream reflects, like other dreams, what the person lives through, feels and thinks, including the sensations of the body.

SceneWhat usually goes with it

When dreaming about menstruation calls for attention

The dream does not diagnose anything. If your period really is late, take a pregnancy test or go to a health service. Heavy bleeding, intense pain or anything outside your usual pattern deserves a medical evaluation, regardless of the dream. And if the dreams turn into frequent nightmares, there is treatment: see nightmares: why they happen and how to have fewer.

Science and belief: Freud, Jung and tradition

In Freud's psychoanalysis. In The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud tells how a friend's wife dreamed she was having her period precisely when it was late. For him, it was a discreet way of announcing her first pregnancy, and also the wish to enjoy a little more freedom before motherhood. It is the reading of one case, not a rule: as we have seen, current research finds no strong link between the cycle and the content of dreams.

In symbols and faith. A Dictionary of Symbols notes that blood has a double meaning: celestial blood, tied to the Sun and to fire, and menstrual blood, tied to the Earth and the Moon. In many cultures, hidden blood is a condition of life and spilled blood is a reminder of death, and from this came the taboos that surrounded menstruation. These are traditional symbols, and they say nothing about how a person today experiences her own cycle.

Bringing both readings together. Tradition links menstrual blood to cycles, to the Moon and to renewal; science sees a dream that mixes bodily sensations with the worries of the day. The useful question is what this dream brought you: relief, apprehension or just a scare?

What dream books say

L. P. Baçan's O Livro dos Sonhos, a Brazilian dream book, has no entry for menstruation, and popular dream dictionaries vary a great deal in what they say about the theme: some speak of renewal and cleansing, others of worry about pregnancy. None of them has a scientific basis. Freud described dream books as a kind of dictionary that translates each image into another one with a fixed meaning. Artemidorus of Daldis, author of the oldest complete Greek dream book that has survived, recommended looking at the dreamer's life before interpreting anything. If you see the dream as a message, both paths suggest the same thing: ask what this image reminds you of at this moment in your life.
