The short answer

Dream interpretation is not prediction and not diagnosis. This article separates what sleep research observes from what popular interpretation associates with the theme.

Dreaming about a mermaid is not a warning of drowning, betrayal or that someone is deceiving you. The mermaid is a character of legends, films and cartoons, and the dream usually uses her when there is attraction to something and, at the same time, fear of getting lost in it: a passion, a tempting proposal, a big change. When she sings or swims calmly, the dream tends to come with enchantment; when she attacks, with fear.

Why a mermaid appears in the dream

A good part of the explanation lies in the continuity between waking life and dreaming, studied by Michael Schredl. An animated film watched with the children, a carnival costume, a tattoo, a day at the beach or the legend of Iara told in childhood stay stored and return at night, mixed with the worries of the moment.

When the mermaid attacks or drags you under, another idea comes in. The threat simulation hypothesis, proposed by Antti Revonsuo, sees the dream as a rehearsal of dangers in a safe setting. Being pulled under the water, unable to come back, is the kind of situation this hypothesis tries to explain: everything seems real, but no one drowns.

If the dream keeps coming back: when to seek help

Dreaming about a mermaid is almost never a cause for concern. If the dream of being dragged under repeats, you wake breathless or with a racing heart several times a week, or you begin to fear sleep, it is worth talking to a health professional. Frequent nightmares have treatment; see how to have fewer nightmares.

Psychoanalysis, symbols and faith: another look at dreaming about a mermaid

In Freud's psychoanalysis. For Freud, the dream fulfills a wish in disguised form and uses condensation, joining several ideas in one image. The mermaid gathers beauty, song and danger in the same figure. Viewing the scene in parts (the voice, the tail, the water, the place) and asking what each recalls is the path he proposed.

In Jung's psychology. Man and His Symbols mentions mermaids directly. In the passage on the anima, the feminine figure in a man's unconscious, the Sirens of Greece and the Lorelei of the Germans personify the dangerous side of the anima, a symbol of a destructive illusion. In the Jungian key, the mermaid who calls can point to an enchantment that promises more than it delivers.

In the Dictionary of Symbols. Chevalier and Gheerbrant recall that the Greek sirens were half woman and half bird, and only in later legends, of Nordic origin, gained a fish tail. Odysseus tied himself to the ship's mast so as not to yield to their song. For the authors, sirens are creations of the unconscious, fascinating and terrifying dreams.

In the traditions of faith. According to the mythology of the orishas gathered by Reginaldo Prandi, the sea and salt waters belong to Yemanja, and rivers and waterfalls to Oshun. That is why many people who dream about a mermaid think of these figures. The theme has its own article: dreaming about Yemanja.

What dream books say

Popular dream books usually give the mermaid a single translation, almost always tied to seduction or deception. Freud called this way of reading the decoding method: each image becomes something else by a fixed code. For him, this left out the main thing, which is what the image recalls to the dreamer.

A cartoon mermaid, seen a thousand times in childhood, does not call for the same reading as the mermaid of a story told by a fisherman on a beach night.

Popular beliefs about this dream

In popular interpretation, the mermaid appears as a sign of seduction, temptation or someone with sweet words and doubtful intentions. The singing mermaid is read as an invitation that calls for caution; the dead mermaid, as the end of an illusion; and swimming beside her, as harmony with your own emotions.
