The short answer

Dream interpretation is not prediction and not diagnosis. This article separates what sleep research observes from what popular interpretation associates with the theme.

Dreaming about a mirror does not announce bad luck, death or betrayal. Mirrors appear in dreams linked to self-image: strange reflections tend to come with times of change, insecurity about appearance or doubt about who you are becoming. A broken mirror, despite its reputation, usually reflects a feeling that something has broken, not seven years of bad luck.

What research observes

Dreams have a well-known feature: faces, objects and settings change shape easily, without you finding it odd at the time. That is why different reflections, changing faces and mirrors showing another scene are common.

Through continuity, worries about appearance, changes in the body, a new haircut or the simple habit of checking the mirror before bed often feed the scene.

When to seek help

Dreaming about a mirror is common and harmless. If it turns into a recurring nightmare and you wake up frightened several times a week, it is worth talking to a health professional: see how to have fewer nightmares.

What dream books say

Livro do Sonho, a popular Brazilian dream dictionary, reads looking at yourself in a mirror as a sign of a new love on the way and financial improvement. In many traditions, the mirror is also a symbol of self-knowledge: the dream would invite you to look at yourself more closely.

Freud described dream books as a kind of dictionary that translates each image into another with a fixed meaning. Artemidorus of Daldis, author of the oldest dream interpretation book that has survived, advised looking at the dreamer's life before interpreting. If you see the dream as a message, both paths suggest the same thing: ask what this image brings to mind in your life right now. See dream meanings according to science and culture.

What folklore says

In folk readings, breaking a mirror brings seven years of bad luck, and in some traditions mirrors are covered after a death. Dreaming about a mirror is read as an invitation to look at yourself. These are cultural beliefs from the dream tradition, worth using for personal reflection rather than as a guarantee of what will happen. See dream meanings according to science and culture.
