The short answer
Dream interpretation is not prediction and not diagnosis. This article separates what sleep research observes from what popular interpretation associates with the theme.
Dreaming about a letter does not guarantee good news or announce bad news. The scene tends to show up when there is a pending conversation, an answer you are waiting for, someone you miss or a decision that depends on another person. Who wrote it, whether it was opened and how you felt holding it matter more than the envelope.

Dreaming about a letter in the light of research
Michael Schredl's 2003 review of the continuity between waking life and dreams shows that dreams follow what occupies the mind during the day. Waiting for a job interview result, a document, a message from someone you love or a bill is the kind of waiting that can turn, at night, into a letter that arrives or never does. Even people who only text still dream about paper envelopes, an old image that is easy to recognize.
When the letter is a love letter, comes from an ex or reveals a betrayal, a 2014 study by Dylan Selterman and colleagues is worth knowing. Following the diaries of people in relationships, they found that dreaming about a partner's jealousy or infidelity was linked to more conflict and less intimacy the next day. The dream predicts nothing, but it can color your mood.

Freud, Jung and faith on this dream
In Freud's psychoanalysis. For Freud, a dream disguises what it means. Through condensation, a single letter can blend several people: one person's handwriting, another's envelope, a third person's topic. That is why he suggested breaking the dream into parts (who sent it, the seal, the sentence you managed to read, what was on the back) and asking what comes to mind about each one.
In Jung's psychology. The introduction to Man and His Symbols sums up a core idea of Jung's: every dream is a direct, personal and meaningful message to the dreamer, using symbols shared by all humanity but read in a private code. Dreaming about a letter is almost that idea turned into an image. Seen through the compensatory function, the letter may carry what waking life avoids saying.
In symbols and faith. In A Dictionary of Symbols, Chevalier and Gheerbrant note that in the ancient East the seal stood for the signer: kings stamped their decisions with it, and it kept documents such as wills closed until the right moment, which also makes the seal a symbol of secrecy. Paul tells the Corinthians that they are his letter, written on the heart (2 Corinthians 3:3). In Afro-Brazilian religions such as Umbanda and Candomblé, Exu is the orisha of communication and pathways. In Allan Kardec's Spiritism, during sleep the spirit may interact with other spirits, a reading some give to letters from the dead.
Bringing both views together. If the letter arrived sealed, it is worth asking which conversation is waiting for its moment.

Scenes that show up most in this dream
| Scene | What it usually comes with |
|---|---|
| Getting a letter and being unable to read it | Waiting for an answer, a sense that some information is missing |
| A letter from someone who has died | Longing, a conversation left unfinished, grief still unfolding |
| A love letter or a letter from an ex | A wish for recognition, tender memories, unresolved business |
| Writing a letter that is never sent | Something that needs to be said, difficulty expressing yourself |
| A collection notice or an official document | Worry about deadlines, bills or pending decisions |
If the letter came from someone who has passed away, you may also like dreaming about someone who died.
When dreaming about a letter calls for attention
Dreaming about a letter is usually a calm dream. If it comes loaded with dread, repeats often (terrible news arriving, a letter that accuses you) and starts to disturb your sleep, talk to a health professional: recurring nightmares can be treated. See what helps reduce nightmares.

What dream dictionaries record
The Brazilian dream book O Livro dos Sonhos, by L. P. Baçan, links a letter to surprises in life and to awkward situations in love; the mail carrier stands for news in life and caution in love.
Interestingly, the letter is the very example Freud used to criticize this kind of book. In The Interpretation of Dreams, he notes that in one dream book of his time a letter meant trouble and a funeral meant an engagement. Freud called this the decoding method: each image swapped for a fixed code, with no regard for the dreamer's life. He found it inadequate.

What folk tradition links to this dream
In popular tradition, getting a letter is often read as a sign of news; a sealed letter, as a secret or something on hold; tearing up or burning a letter, as a wish to close a chapter; a lost letter, as a missed chance. These are cultural readings that help you reflect, not predictions. See dream meanings in science and culture.

Frequently asked questions
Does dreaming about a letter mean I will get news?
There is no evidence that dreams announce news. Folklore ties letters to new developments, but research shows the dream usually reflects something you are waiting for or a conversation still pending.
What does it mean to dream about a letter from someone who died?
It often comes with longing and with what was left unsaid. Spiritism holds that the spirit may interact with other spirits during sleep; psychology sees part of grieving. Neither reading turns the dream into a prediction.
Why couldn't I read the letter in my dream?
Many people report words that change or vanish when they try to read in a dream. The scene often matches a feeling that some information or answer is missing in waking life.
What is the spiritual meaning of dreaming about a letter?
It depends on the tradition. Paul calls the Corinthians his letter, written on the heart (2 Corinthians 3:3); in Umbanda and Candomblé, Exu governs communication. These are faith readings to reflect on, not guarantees.
